A mature dengue virion consists of an isometric nucleocapsid 20-30 nm in diameter, covered by a lipid envelope 10 nm in depth. The envelope consists of a lipid bilayer in which is embedded an E and M part. The envelope protein has the size between 51,000 and 59,000 Daltons that mediates attachment, fusion, and penetration, and a small non glycosylated internal matrix protein of approximately 8,500 Daltons. The envelope protein is glycosylated in most Flavi viruses and is exposed on the virion surface.
